The English composer, Gerald Finzi (1901–1956), wrote the cantata Dies Natalis for solo voice and string orchestra. Three oil paintings of this piece are shown here. The fourth painting, a watercolour: 'For Life I had never cared greatly' is from his six songs for baritone and piano, entitled I Said to Love—settings of poetry by Thomas Hardy.
